SHALL WE DANCE? Kids take big step to benefit the arts

Thursday, April 14th 2005

The kids from Public School 144 in Forest Hills really cut a rug the other night at the annual benefit of the Center for Arts Education at Christie's in Manhattan.

In fact, they cut several rugs. It was, in part, a dance of thanks because the kids learned their ballroom dancing through a partnership with the American Ballroom Theatre, which was funded by a Center for Arts Education grant.

But their appearance Monday wasn't the first time in the ballroom limelight for the PS 144 kids. They previously won a competition against eight other schools at the Rainbow Team Match held at the World Trade Financial Center. They also appeared earlier this year in the documentary film "Mad Hot Ballroom."

Led by chairwoman Laurie Tisch, the Center for Arts Education has raised more than $34.5 million for arts education, program and partnerships in the New York City public schools since it was founded in 1996.
