SCHOOL ARTS GRANT MUSIC TO CITY'S EARS

The arts will get some class treatment this week.

Mayor Giuliani and Schools Chancellor Rudy Crew plan to announce a new $12 million grant to resurrect arts education, reversing a trend that has seen the near death of art, music and dance in schools across the system.

"The exciting thing is that it puts the arts back into the schools," said Schuyler Chapin, the city's commissioner of cultural affairs.

"It will finally address a problem: The lack of arts education, which has been technically out of the school system for almost 23 years."
