Director of Development

Founded in 1996, CAE makes important and unique contributions to advancing equitable and quality arts learning through rigorous implementation of a comprehensive suite of programs: direct arts in education services for students in and out of school time; professional development for educators, teaching artists and school leaders; arts education research and dissemination of model programs; and advocacy and public engagement initiatives for the general public, school communities and policy makers.

CAE is governed by a 19 member Board of Directors, has an annual operating budget of $2.1M, employs 14 full and part time staff, and has a roster of 100+ teaching artist staff. 

Job Opportunity: CAE seeks an accomplished Director of Development, DD, who is a results oriented leader, a collaborative team member and an energetic and entrepreneurial fundraising professional. This positon provides hands on support, strategic direction, and management and coordination of all aspects of fundraising and revenue development. The ideal candidate has an established history of successful relationships with NYC funders and philanthropic individuals and experience managing a team of professionals. 

The DD reports to the Executive Director and currently oversees a development team of two Development Managers, p/t administrative staff support, and, as required, interns and consultants. The DD works very closely with the entire Board of Directors and its committees.

Qualifications: 

•B.A. degree, Masters preferred;

•Minimum 10 years of development work with 5 years in a leadership role, preferably in a mid-sized or large NYC arts or education organization;

•Significant and successful experience managing staff, volunteers, interns and consultants;

•An established record of meeting and exceeding institutional and government fundraising goals; 

•An established record of cultivating and closing major gifts and exceeding contributed income goals in a competitive and sophisticated individual donor environment;

•Exceptional planning, strategy, financial budgeting, and communication skills;

•Experience working with teams of senior staff, peer departments, outside program partners and the Board in a fast-paced, creatively-driven organization;

•High proficiency in Raisers Edge (or other CRM databases) including analysis and reporting, and MS Office Suite;

•Passion for and experience in revenue development for organizations working in arts and culture, arts education or education.

Duties: 

•Create comprehensive and strategic revenue development plans to increase and develop new contributed and earned revenue sources and expand existing funding streams;

•Raise a minimum of $1.2M per year in institutional, government grants funding;

•Raise a minimum of $600K in individual gifts, annual appeals, and special events;

•Help secure and renew $500K of earned income, in partnership with Teaching & Learning Department;

•Motivate, mentor and manage development staff and maintain open and collaborative relationships with the Executive Director, and other department directors and staff;

•Motivate and work productively with all Board members, including Board leadership and committees, to achieve development goals;

•Prepare and update internal reports, tracking systems, and manage the database’s functions as tools to make informed, data driven decisions;

•Plan and produce large and small special events and other cultivation activities;  

•Manage all grant writing, proposal development and prospect research;

•Lead development of the organization’s fundraising budget for each fiscal year, including the tracking and all requirements associated with revenue allocations and budgeting;

•Coordinate Board and Committee communications and organize and prepare reports for regular meetings with a focus on outcomes and strategies.
