Statement by Executive Director Richard Kessler on David Steiner Appointment As NY State Commissioner of Education

July 27, 2009 -- New York, NY -- The Center for Arts Education applauds the selection of David Steiner as the next Commissioner of Education for the State of New York.

As director of arts education at the National Endowment for the Arts, Dr. Steiner led with a deep understanding of the benefits arts education provides for all public school students. His appointment comes at a critical time for education in the state of New York, with complex challenges ranging from turning around failing schools and closing the achievement gap, to compliance with requirements for arts instruction mandated by state law.
