Public Advocate Arts Education Report: DOE Fails to Meet State Regulations for Arts Instruction

According to a report issued in June 2008 by New York City Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, the great majority of New York City public schools are failing to comply with state requirements to teach the arts.

.While there are some encouraging signs from the data provided, the report points to an alarming disinvestment in key elements of quality arts instruction and highlights the continued widespread lack of compliance with state educational mandates for arts education at the elementary and middle school levels.

The Center for Arts Education commends the New York City Department of Education for issuing the second annual Arts in Schools Report, which provides the public with helpful information about arts education offerings in public schools. However, the release of today’s report makes clear that the school system is still failing to provide students with the arts education they are entitled to by law.

While The Center for Arts Education (CAE) supports increased accountability, these reports only paint part of the picture of what is happening in our city’s public schools.
